Getting started
How does BudgeTorch work?
It's zero-based budgeting: each month you give every dollar of income a job (a category, a debt payment, or savings) until there's nothing left to assign. Financial Health then shows your net worth, debt-free date, and progress over time.
Do I need an account?
No. Your budget is stored on your phone.
Do I need a partner to use BudgeTorch?
No. Everything works on one phone. Partner sync is optional, for when you want to share a budget with someone.
Partner sync
How do we share a budget?
On both phones, open Settings → Sync with partner → Pair with partner. Stand side by side, scan each other's codes, and check that both phones show the same 12-digit code before you confirm.
Can more than two phones share a budget?
No. Sync is for exactly two phones, one per partner.
My partner's changes aren't showing up.
Open the app on both phones. Sync runs while the app is open. Check Settings → Sync with partner for its status. If one phone shows a message about updating, install the latest version on both phones.
A phone says it was restored from a backup and needs to pair again.
A new or restored phone doesn't have the old phone's private keys (they never leave a phone). Unpair in Settings → Sync with partner, then pair again in person.
Can BudgeTorch read our budget?
No. Sync is end-to-end encrypted with keys that only your two phones have. See the privacy policy at budgetorch.app/privacy.
Saved copies and restoring
How do I back up my budget?
Settings → Export data → Save a copy, then send the file to your email or a cloud drive. BudgeTorch reminds you once a month.
I forgot the password for a saved copy.
It can't be opened without the password, and we can't recover it. That's what keeps it private. Save a new copy from your phone if you still have it.
How do I restore a saved copy?
Settings → Import data → Open a saved copy. If you're paired, unpair first: restoring replaces everything, and while paired it would also change your partner's budget. Pair again afterwards.
Deleting your data
Uninstall the app, or use Settings → Clear all data (unpair first if you're paired). Unpairing deletes everything the sync relay holds for your pair of phones.
